agronomy 101

Fields of yellow dominate the landscape in Vlaanderen this time of year, and they're quite breathtaking, especially if you're lucky enough to catch a glimpse of one during a 30 second spot of sunshine. Still meaning to ask a farmer, or a friend, what the plant is. But HEY, maybe you know!

Is it mustard (first guess)? Or rapeseed, which i've seen in Canada many years ago.

Our autumn is kind of a downer, visually.

Our norway maples are still green (this being the 3rd week of OCt!) and many ohter trees are barely turning color. Only a few trees are "popping", I think the yellow (sugar maples?) are okay but the rest will lose their green leaves methinks, or just go to brown.

The bird activity lately has been grand...I feel the excitement coming on as they prepare for winter and head farther south. Feeders have been busy. The calls and songs sound more like spring on some days!

We're expecting 80 degrees tomorrow. And as Paul will tell you, our quince bush JUST flowered again.
My mourning garden (the one you helped with) is doing okay. Though it didn't burst into beautiful color again once it died back, I did manage to keep it alive. Maybe there's a lesson in there somewhere.

I'm off to the morning races now!

Love, Laura

Cannot believe what a warm Fall you're having! The last time we had 80 degrees was back in April. Hope that doesn't mean you'll have a freezing winter.

Fall colors here seem more brilliant than I remember in the past 2 years, and the colors in England were spectacular. Still not very cold, but i'm sure it's coming soon.
