remembering grandma ....

Since we couldn't be in Virginia for Grandma Phoebe's funeral yesterday, we decided to have our own little party here at home ..... and what better way to remember her than by lighting some fireworks!  Oh, how Grandma LOVED fireworks!
She loved making breakfast and having a looooooooooooooooooooooong talk at the breakfast table ... so we made salmon cakes, fried apples, spoonbread and eggs, a few of the traditional Virginian staples.  In grandma's words, it was "delicious, delectable and divine".
We lit candles ... we shared our memories ... we laughed ... we said a little prayer.
pictures of grandma, her favorite flowers - yellow roses, Fredericksburg, old letters from grandma, a dictionary she gave us, Degas dancers dancing ... she was on her way to Cambodia to dance when Granddaddy proposed!                                           grandma, WE LOVE YOU!

That's a very sweet remembrance. I'm sorry to hear the news of your loss, we're all thinking of you.

thanks for your kind words, John, and your support. It's always good hearing from you.

I think it was especially helpful for the kids to have a little memorial, as it gave them a chance to hear stories they'd never heard and think about the things they loved most about her. It warms my heart that they have such fond memories of their grandma Phoebe, and that they understand how dear she was to me.

Grandma would have loved the fireworks, Courtenay! And of course, the sumptuous breakfast you fixed, just like the ones she used to make. That was a very fitting way to remember her and to celebrate her full life. Love, Mom

Hey Courtenay,
I just thought "I haven't checked out Courtenay's blog in a long time" and logged on to see the news about Grandma Phoebe. I'm so sorry! I know how close you were to her. What a wonderful tribute to her life. Love,
Rochelle

Thanks Mom! Thanks Rochelle! Sometimes I find Thijs sitting in front of grandma's pictures, still thinking about her, and wanting to tell me things he remembers about her. Her memory will live on as long as we continue to tell her stories.
