This spring I've seen loads of chicks in our garden, thanks to our well-stocked feeder that attracts them from far and wide. Somedays they devour the food in < style="font-weight:bold;">chick count? Not spectacular, but not bad either ...
5 blue tits
5 great tits
2 marsh tits
3 green finch
2 great spotted woodpecker
1 robin
1 hedge sparrow that won't stop chirping!
4 goldcrest

That's a LOT of chicks, Courtenay!
For such a small suburban garden, you have an amazinng number of birds come to your place. Sometimes when we speak over the phone, I can hardly hear you from all the chirping!
Not that I'm complaining....

Hey - need some advice. Jonathan has to count birds he sees for a month from a bird house or feeder that he made. He made a house, but we're having no luck attracting anyone. Guess we should have made a feeder instead. We've got it hanging from a tree out front, but he's so bummed. No birds. Thoughts?

Hi Rochelle, for counting birds, I think Jonathan would have better luck with a bird feeder. The key to success with feeders is location, location, location. Feeders placed near good sources of cover (shrubs, evergreens, etc) are ideal as they let birds dash to cover if a predator bird approaches. Another key is food type: black-oil sunflower seeds are good for a variety of birds, and a good seed mix will attract ground-feeding birds, like doves for instance. Could also just try sprinking seed on your deck railing to see if anyone bites, but you might get squirrels coming first! Pine cones smeared w peanut butter and then rolled in bird seed would also be easy. Can also use plastic or paper milk/juice cartons to make quickie feeder, and insert wooden dowel below feeder hole for birds to perch on. Good luck and let me know if you need other ideas!
